Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ Gets New Trailer Ahead of NYFF Premiere Tonight

Martin Scorsese's latest film is the sprawling epic The Irishman, based on the book "I Heard You Paint Houses" wherein Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran admits to his part in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, bringing the Teamster boss' mysterious death to a definitive conclusion. The film premieres tonight at the New York Film Festival and Netflix has dropped a new trailer to celebrate.

Now, if you notice something strange about the way virtually everyone looks in this new trailer, it's because Scorsese has employed cgi de-aging to Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. They all look abnormally shiny, and there's still a few weeks before the film hits wide release and then comes to Netflix, so there's time for them to fix this, but if this movie is truly three and a half hours, I'm going to have a hard time looking at these wax figures come to life. The whole movie looks like it was filmed in the Uncanny Valley.

I've learned never to count Scorsese out, so there's a chance this may be a masterpiece—and based on the subject matter, it's entirely likely—but this feels like it might be the beginning of the end. Or the continuation of the end, depending upon how you feel about Silence.

The Irishman opens in select theaters on November 1 before finding its permanent home on Netflix November 27.
