One of the things Mark Ruffalo does better than many of his contemporaries is righteous indignation. He seems like one of those guys who wants to do the right thing, no matter the cost to him or his family, which is why he's perfectly suited for the starring role in the new Todd Haynes flick Dark Waters. Seriously though, you give Ruffalo a doofus haircut and a rumpled suit, and he'll deliver pathos like you've never seen.

Anne Hathaway co-stars as Ruffalo's wife, whose family comes under fire when he decides to stand up to his corporate masters when he discovers they have been poisoning West Virginia farmers for decades. This is new territory for Haynes, who has proven himself a master of melodrama (Far From Heaven, Carol) and musical biopics (Velvet Goldmine, I'm Not There), but has never really done a legal thriller before.

The film's also got an aces supporting cast including Tim Robbins, Bill Camp, Victor Garber, Bill Pullman, and Brat-Packer Mare Winningham. The film is likely to be a major awards player, unless it's just a boring, run of the mill thriller, but I doubt Haynes is capable of making such a movie. Dark Waters hits theaters on November 22.
