The last thing the world needed was another X-Men movie with the current cast, but since 2016's Apocalypse introduced a whole host of new character while also wrapping up threads for the old characters, it felt like a soft reboot rather than a franchise closer. Now the franchise officially comes to a close, if only by default, with Dark Phoenix, the final X-Men film before the characters join the MCU in a few years.
This cast has made two good X-Men movies and one stinker, and all indications are that this we've got another awful movie headed our way tomorrow. The film's Rotten Tomatoes score is 22% as of press time, a full fifteen points lower than the next closest X-Men film, 2009's god awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine. For the record, those scores don't mean much, but when you look at the X-Men films with scores below 50%, it's all the rotten ones: XMO: Wolverine, The Last Stand, and Apocalypse.
This new clip from the film is also a bad harbinger of things to come in this film as it ends with Jennifer Lawrence's thoroughly checked out Mystique telling James McAvoy's Professor X that he should rename the team X-Women, because that's the real problem here. Watch it for yourself, it doesn't make any more sense in context.
Dark Phoenix opens tonight.
