The Terminator franchise has had lots of sequels since Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but they've ranged from the dumb but fun T3 to the unwatchable Terminator: Genisys. Series creator James Cameron has returned to the franchise as a writer for the first time since T2, with Deadpool's Tim Miller is now handling directorial duties, and their new conceit with Terminator: Dark Fate is that the film is a direct sequel to T2 that ignores all of the sequels that have been made in the interim.
While that may sound like small potatoes for a franchise that has dropped the ball on a satisfactory conclusion three times now, it's the hip thing to do now with films like Halloween and The Predator doing it last year. I don't know if this gamut will pay off, but I'm glad to see Linda Hamilton back as Sarah Connor, and of course it's always great to see Arnold.
The real breakout star here is likely going to be Mackenzie Davis. Following solid work in films like The Martian, Blade Runner 2049, and the show Halt and Catch Fire, she seems like she's on the verge of hitting the big time, particularly as an action star. I sincerely hope that pans out. If nothing else, Dark Fate has to be better than Genisys. Hopefully it truly is the best one since T2.
Terminator: Dark Fate opens in theaters everywhere on November 1.
