Soundgarden and Audioslave voice of a generation Chris Cornell offed himself shortly after finishing a show in Detroit. The Motor City's pretty damn depressing, but almost certainly chalk this one up to the cumulative effects of long term drug use.

Cornell himself has spoken openly about his long standing love affair with Oxy, which for those who have never experimented, makes a hanging a noose and ending it all seems as reasonable as grabbing a sandwich. This according to TMZ who pays real cops real money for stories, so, fairly reliable:

TMZ has confirmed with police the family friend had to force his way into Cornell's room and found him with a band around his neck. We're told there was no blood, and police suspect suicide based on the scene.

Cornell's wife, Vicky Cornell, is putting out statements about her husband being fine and upbeat and anything but suicidal as shortly as her conversation with him right before the Soungarden show in Detroit. Though she's the one who also called the family friend to bust into Cornell's hotel room when he wasn't answering his phone for an extended period of time. When you're calling people to break in doors, you have an inkling.

The opioid addiction epidemic in the U.S. is somewhat unique in that it's a narcotic often leaned into with the assistance of legitimate doctors. Not to mention dentists, evil incarnate motherfuckers. Not like your orthopedist will ever recommend you try crack. Or weed for that matter. But a scrip for painkillers is never not on the menu.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers can crank out a ton. And that's not even counting what comes across the border in the anuses of good people looking for a better life. The opiates rewire the brain and make it a super bitch to kick. Now Soundgarden is dead. Losing rock stars in their 50's somehow seems more shocking than in their 20's.
