Ridley Scott Will Direct a ‘Gladiator’ Sequel Next, For No Apparent Reason

Ridley Scott is one of those directors that never stops tinkering with his movies, whether it's by re-cutting Blade Runner fifteen different times or making countless Alien prequels that only muddy up the mythology more. Now he's returning to one of his most beloved films and crafting a belated sequel to 2000's Best Picture winner Gladiator.

According to Deadline, Scott is moving forward on a sequel to the 2000 film centered around the character of Lucius, son of Connie Nielsen's Lucilla and nephew to Joaquin Phoenix's villainous Commodus. He was played in the original film by Spencer Treat Clark, who is co-starring in another long overdue sequel to a film from the year 2000, Unbreakable. There's no word on whether or not he'll be returning, though don't be surprised if Scott recasts the role with a beefier dude.

The film's script is being written by Peter Craig who penned The Town, two Hunger Games films, and the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick, the latter of which indicates that he's the go-to guy for writing long overdue sequels that nobody asked for or wanted. If nothing else, perhaps this film can give us the long overdue porno parody sequel, Glad He Ate Her, Too.

Look for Gladiator II: Electric Boogaloo to hit theaters in time for the original's 20th anniversary in 2020.
