As Rosemary Cross said in Rushmore, “nihilo sanctum estne?” and despite being bad Latin, its use in that film to say, "Is nothing sacred" can be applied to today's news that Disney intends to reboot its Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
I suppose that one foolproof way for a studio to get rid of a problematic star is to reboot it without that star, but let's not forget that—repulsive as he may be—Johnny Depp kinda singlehandedly made this a franchise in the first place.
According to Deadline, Disney has met with the writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to gauge their interest in penning the reboot. Reese and Wernick first hit it big with Zombieland, before moving on to write both Deadpool films, as well as the upcoming Michael Bay/Ryan Reynolds Netflix joint 6 Underground.
If Disney is looking to continue the trend of slightly meta self referential reboots that are absolutely rampant in this day and age, these are the guys to do that, I suppose. Jerry Bruckheimer is staying on as one of the producers, which is frankly not a very good sign. He should just focus on swimming in his vault of money, Scrooge McDuck style.
My guess is that Depp will be involved in a sort of scene that's a ceremonial passing of the torch to Zac Efron or Ryan Reynolds or whomever else it might be, but definitely one of those two, for sure. The world waits with anticipation to see what's next. Or not.
