It's fair to call Venom a cultural phenomenon at this point, considering it opened huge and didn't sink like a stone immediately because of bad word of mouth. One of the weirdest things about the entire film is the fact that Eminem recorded an entire album's worth of songs about the film, kind of like Prince did with Batman in 1989, only infinitely weirder.
I mean, I get wanting to be featured on the soundtrack of a major comic book movie, but Venom doesn't feel like anyone's first choice. Did people actually grow up giving a shit about Venom? I get Batman, but Venom? He seemed, at least in New Jersey in the 90s, like a character that was on the t-shirt of every third heavy set guy you'd see. It's like they were exclusively sold in XXL.
It's weird to see Eminem rapping while walking up the stairs of the Empire State Building. I know it's probably the only route to that part of the building but there's just something amusing about him ascending stairs while rapping...
What a production this was, just for the closing of Jimmy Kimmel's show. Like Venom, I'd like to see a cost breakdown on this thing.
Venom is in theaters now and Eminem's album about Venom is on iTunes, I guess. Or Spotify. What are the kids using these days?
