David Fincher Still Set to Direct ‘World War Z’ Sequel, Begins Shooting Next Summer

A wild rumor spread last year that David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) was interested in directing a sequel to 2013's World War Z, an all but forgotten zombie movie starring Brad Pitt that somehow grossed over $500 million at the box office worldwide. The rumors ended when Fincher signed on last spring to direct the film, though enthusiasm waned immediately as it was announced the film wouldn't be shot in 2018.

While many thought it might never happen, Variety confirmed with producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner that filming on the project is set to begin next summer when Pitt is done with reshoots for Tarantino's movie and Fincher's done with season two of Netflix's Mindhunter. It's good news for fans of the director and actor's previous team-ups—this will mark their first time together since their third collaboration, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, over a decade ago.

World War Z wasn't bad for a movie that turned into a Pepsi commercial in the third act, but nothing that needed a sequel. My hope is that Fincher will just ignore the first one and make the movie they should've made the first time around. If he goes balls to the wall on this and really just lets Pitt cut up some zombies, it might be interesting. Just try not to think about the last time Fincher directed a franchise sequel.
