If you had the luxury of growing up in a home with parents who loved classic comedy, you likely saw some Laurel & Hardy films as a child, probably March of the Wooden Soldiers. British comedian Steve Coogan and beloved character actor John C. Reilly are stepping into the legendary roles of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in the new film Stan & Ollie.

The film was written by Jeff Pope—who earned an Oscar nomination for co-writing Philomena with Coogan—and is directed by Jon S. Baird, who directed Filth with James McAvoy and lots of television. Stan & Ollie chronicles the time the legendary comedy team did a live theatre tour through Europe after WWII in an attempt to boost morale.

Flashbacks abound in the film, obviously, with the two leads playing the men over a period of about 30 years from the height of their success to near the end of their lives. With such a wide open set of acting categories for awards season this year, I hope that both men—but especially Reilly—reap a little recognition from this one. We should know soon if it has a shot at any awards as it is set to close out the BFI London Film Festival in October.

Stan & Ollie is set to open in limited release before the end of the year, with a wider release to follow in January.
