Depending on the day, we're either best friends with Russia or they're our biggest enemy, which makes the new thriller Hunter Killer the most ill-advised, tone deaf movie possible to be coming out in 2018. Gerard Butler plays a US submarine captain who teams up with a group of Navy SEALs to rescue the Russian President who has been kidnapped in a coup attempt.
There are so many things wrong with that sentence, not least of which is having Gerard Butler play an American. Again. Gerard Butler is not untalented, but he's also proven time and again that he cannot do an American accent. Also, I thought I'd heard Gerard Butler say just about the dumbest things any actor has ever said, but then he opens his mouth in this trailer and utters the phrase, "It's my job to keep you alive long enough so you can testify." Ooooo, riveting stuff.
Perhaps the most improbable thing of all with this film, though, is that it's actually getting a theatrical release. You'd have been forgiven for thinking that this was just a big budget SyFy Original Movie, but it's actually going to play in theaters. Oh, and Gary Oldman's in it, too. I honestly do not know what the most unbelievable thing of all is, because this all sounds like it was dreamed up by The Onion.
Hunter Killer hits theaters on October 26.
