Long Live the King in ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Debut Trailer (VIDEO)

While 2014's Godzilla had its fair share of problems, it managed to be one of the few big budget blockbusters to actually leave the audience wanting more rather than overwhelming them with endless sensory overload giant monster fights. It's not a perfect film, but it was pretty close to a great origin film that set up bigger adventures to come.

And that time has come at last. Next May we'll get the long gestating sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the film that will inevitably lead to a crossover where Godzilla does battle with the giant gorilla from last year's Kong: Skull Island. Like it's 2014 predecessor, this flick looks to be keeping the focus on a group of humans coming to terms with the fact that giant monsters exist, and the hope that Godzilla can once more be summoned to save the day.

Music snobs will recognize Debussy's "Clair de Lune" being used on the epic reveal of Godzilla, which—for my money—is an indication that this will be another fairly highbrow effort from them. Just because the world of these films contains giant monsters doesn't mean that it has to dumb down any of those conceits for you to buy into them. Or maybe they just thought it was a killer tune for that moment. Who can tell at this point?

You also probably recognize Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown as the main human protagonist this time around, along with a stacked supporting cast including Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Thomas Middleditch, Bradley Whitford, O'Shea Jackson, Jr. (aka Ice Cube Jr), and Tywin Lannister himself, Charles Dance. It looks like the only folks returning from the first film are Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe's monster experts, which is just fine by me.

Who knows if this is gonna be any good, but the fact that they're teasing Mothra, Rodan, and especially King Ghidorah leads me to believe that there won't be as much complaining that there weren't enough monsters in the first one. Godzilla: King of the Monsters opens on May 31, 2019.
