‘Logan’ Director Throws in His Two Cents on the Current State of ‘Star Wars’ Fandom

Back in May, it was announced that Logan and Walk the Line director James Mangold was going to be writing and directing a Boba Fett movie. Then Solo came out and underwhelmed at the box office, leading to rumors that Lucasfilm was putting all of its various Star Wars spin-off movies on hold, rumors they later refuted.

Never one to stand idly by and not share his opinion on things, Mangold is now weighing in on Star Wars, but not necessarily on the current state of his Boba Fett movie. Rather, Mangold has thrown his two cents into the toxic fandom debate that was raging earlier this week after a post made by M:I—Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie.

In a tweet posted yesterday morning, Mangold warned of the perils of attacking legitimate filmmakers like McQuarrie and Rian Johnson, as that will inevitably lead to a time when talented filmmakers won't want to direct franchise films...

At the point when work writing & directing big franchises has become the emotionally loaded equivalent of writing a new chapter of The Bible (w/ the probable danger of being stoned & called a blasphemer), then a lot of bolder minds r gonna leave these films 2 hacks & corp boards.

When some douchebag decided to weigh in with his opinion, Mangold then shut him down...

If you feel that is the case, if u feel the film makers are just corporate tools and powerless, then why bitch at us? In the case of @rianjohnson and @chrismcquarrie, i assure you these cats are not “owned”. They actually fight your battles behind the scenes.

He then closed out his thoughts on the subject by recommending fans follow the path of one beloved SW character over another...

The fervor of some attacks has an evangelical ferocity. Now, I get it cause for many folk, including me, the SW saga holds tremendous spiritual power, similar to a religious text. But we must remember to try to handle our disappointments the way Yoda might, as opposed to Darth.

He raises many valid points, namely that if fans think that guys like Johnson and McQuarrie are corporate stooges, they have absolutely no idea what a corporate stooge actually is. I also love that he refers to them as "cats," like he's a old blues musician.

Personally I don't think we need a Boba Fett movie, but if Mangold is in charge, I think he'll give us something unique and somewhat original, rather than another rehash of stories we already know by heart. Just something to think about.
