Lucasfilm may have made their first really smart decision in a while, as they're allegedly going to take a break from making spin-off "Star Wars Story" films for right now. According to Collider, sources have indicated that work on both the Obi-Wan standalone film and the recently announced Boba Fett film has ground to a halt as the company focuses all of their resources on next December's Episode IX.
Honestly, it's a blessing in disguise. Solo: A Star Wars Story obviously didn't connect with audiences, probably because it was a lame god damned movie that just didn't need to exist. It was fine and had its moments, but all I kept thinking the entire time I was watching it was, "When are they gonna get to the fireworks factory?" Had it been more like the first thirty minutes all the way through, it would have been amazing. But it wasn't. And it isn't. No offense to Opie or Clint Howard.
Lucasfilm has now learned that the Star Wars name alone isn't enough to bring people in, and I hope that this break gives them a chance to refocus on things like the upcoming new and original trilogies coming from Rian Johnson and Benioff & Weiss of Game of Thrones. Those are potentially very exciting, much more so than doing a movie about what Obi-Wan was up to when he was hanging out on the desert planet of Tatooine, fighting Sand People or whatever. Who could care?
That's why I love and miss the old Star Wars Expanded Universe. It was the proper place for Han Solo origin stories, Boba Fett bounty hunting legends, and tales of Obi-Wan fighting Tusken Raiders and laying pipe in the various villages of Tatooine. Perhaps Lucasfilm is now learning of their value, and also learning that everything under the sun doesn't need to be a Star Wars movie.
