Arguably one of the most versatile actresses of her generation, Helena Bonham Carter has been a solid supporting presence in some very good films—Fight Club, The King's Speech—and she's also been the best part of a lot of bad films—Alice in Wonderland, Les Mis, Sweeney Todd.
Now she's being eyed for what could be the role of her career, the main villain in the next Bond movie. This would make her the first woman to take on the role of main antagonist for Bond, and if you listen closely, you can hear the faint sound of MRA's sharpening their pitchforks already.
If I might appeal to their better nature, though, there are a couple of reasons to give this flick the benefit of the doubt. First and foremost, the Daniel Craig Bonds have been operating on the Star Trek TOS movie formula where every other one is fantastic. If you've been keeping score at home, that means we're due for a good Bond on the heels of the mediocre-at-best Spectre.
Second, Danny Boyle is directing and his best films all have a kinetic energy that propels them, and I honestly think his work since winning the Oscar is better than his pre-Oscar work. Finally, Craig knows this will be his last go-around as 007 and he's going to want to go out on a high note. None of the Bonds have gone out on a high note—except perhaps George Lazenby—and to be the guy who breaks that curse would make him a legend as Bond.
So yeah, before you start screaming about unwanted advances being made on your childhood, let's wait and see a trailer at least. No point in getting mad about what something might theoretically become, though I realize that's your guys' whole bag. Try relaxing for once, if only to try something different. It's just a movie, after all.
