Enormous Shark ‘The Meg’ is Coming for Jason Statham in New TV Spot (VIDEO)

Imagine Jaws but with a bigger shark and Jason Statham in the combined roles of Brody and Quint, and you'll have some semblance of what we're dealing with in this summer's The Meg. It looks, mercifully, like it's going to lean into its ridiculous concept of a Naval captain (Statham) tracking down an enormous prehistoric shark that killed his entire crew.

It's hard to tell with director Jon Turteltaub, though, as his National Treasure movies don't go anywhere near as far into the ridiculousness of their premises as they should. Hopefully he doesn't hedge his bets as much as he did with those films and just let Statham do his thing.

The other part that has me worried is the presence of Rainn Wilson, who is clearly the comic relief, taking up the Hooper role but with the look of Quint. None of it makes any sense. It's kind of a giant mess of people who all likely think they're in different movies.

Anyways, I really hope they lean hard into the ridiculousness. No one likes a self-serious movie like this. It's why most of The Rock Johnson's movies evaporate from the public consciousness the minute they leave theaters. You can't take a 70-foot shark movie seriously. Allow me to rephrase... You shouldn't take a 70-foot shark movie seriously. I'm worried they don't realize that. The Meg opens on August 10.
