Watching The Last Jedi again this weekend, it still pisses me off that Finn closes his arc and the audience is given time to accept his death, only to have the whole thing ripped out from under you at the last second. It's the major thing I can't get past in the film. If your ultimate goal is to leave him alive, then just have him follow Poe back to the base. Same result, only this time we don't have to buy that Rose doesn't accidentally kill them both and that they make it all the way back to base without being picked off by a single First Order vehicle.
Nevertheless, I suppose that if Finn's arc isn't complete yet, he's better off paired with Rey than Rose—who I'm assuming J.J. will kill off screen. According to Slashfilm, J.J.'s definitely repairing his wonder twins for Episode IX, as John Boyega revealed at this weekend's Awesome Con in Washington, D.C.
“I haven’t read the script for Episode 9. But Daisy did shoot me a text saying, 'Oh my gosh, I just heard from J.J. [Abrams], and we’re back together.' That’s what I’m really excited about, is Finn and Rey back together again.”
Absolutely, let's just remake Episode VII while we're at it. If Force Awakens was A New Hope with an extra jolt of adrenaline, this can be Force Awakens with its testicles hooked up to the engine of one of those Fast & Furious cars. Who cares at this point, right?
