Ava DuVernay to Bring DC’s The New Gods to the Big Screen

Having proven herself able to handle big budget films featuring characters wearing ridiculously stupid costumes and wigs like you wouldn't believe, DC has tapped A Wrinkle in Time and Selma director Ava DuVernay to bring Jack Kirby's New Gods of the Fourth World to the big screen. Deadline is reporting that DuVernay will direct a script from writer Kario Salem, who penned the utterly forgettable film The Score from 2001.

The fact that DC is aiming to get this property on the big screen shouldn't be too surprising, as virtually everything about Zack Snyder's contribution to the DC film canon was heading toward this in the first place. Humble brag, I actually predicted this two years ago. What I couldn't have predicted was the director and writer they'd bring in to handle this.

I haven't seen A Wrinkle in Time, but I did like DuVernay's prior film, Selma. It was an incredibly well made film that deftly juggled multiple storylines. DuVernay herself actually turned down the chance to direct Black Panther a few years ago, so it's hard to say this might not just be her trying not to pass up something huge again.

In the piece over at Deadline, they mention that DuVernay once tweeted that Big Barda—one of the New Gods—was her favorite superhero. I suppose this made her qualified for the job in the same way Kevin Smith's joke in Mallrats about Superman killing mortal women with his seed led to him getting a job writing Superman Lives. That's a stretch, sure, but it's the only straight line I can draw here. Also, let's start petitioning now to get Oprah as Granny Goodness. Sure the racists will scream about it, but those assholes will scream about anything.

Of course I'm willing to give this thing the benefit of the doubt. Let's wait and see a trailer, at the very least, before rendering final judgment. Ah, who am I kidding? This is the internet. Let't nitpick this to death before cameras even start rolling.
