Andy Serkis Talks Supreme Leader Snoke’s Backstory—or Lack Thereof—in ‘The Last Jedi’

One of the biggest gripes with The Last Jedi was that they killed off Supreme Leader Snoke before we found out where he went to elementary school. It's one of those things you're either totally fine with or consider emblematic of the film's problems. Andy Serkis, who did the mo-cap work for Snoke, is fully aware of people's issues with Snoke's lack of backstory in the films, and to be honest, he's kind of okay with it all.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Serkis says that there were extensive discussions about the character's origins, but there's been a decision not to reveal them and that is just fine by him...

"We wanted him to have a great deal of mystery, but we did … J.J. and I discussed it, and Rian and I did discuss backstories to him, where he came from. I’ve been asked to not shed anything, should we want to bring him back in any way whether [in a] prequel or whatever. I think there’s something cool about that. It still does remain a mystery for people. I know that some people find it incredibly frustrating, but I think it allows for further exploration and layering at a further point."

He does reveal Snoke to be badly damaged from "previous battles. It’s a sort of decay as well. He’s quite an old character..." he says before adding that he's "a couple of hundred years old." So yeah, they clearly have plans for Snoke in the future, though I imagine it'll be done mostly through books and various other forms of media rather than in Episode IX. What do you guys think?
