Earlier this week we told you that DC had decided the villain of Wonder Woman 2 was gonna be Cheetah and they were pursuing a big name actress for the role. Well, they landed one, just probably not one of the ones you were thinking of. According to Deadline, WB and DC are in deep talks with Kristen Wiig to play Cheetah opposite the returning Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.
Before you light your torches and grab your pitchforks, allow me to remind you of some key facts. Kristen Wiig was literally the only person in Zoolander 2 who did anything resembling actual comedy, so let's all give her the benefit of the doubt for a moment. She's a committed actress. She has made films with Darren Aronofsky, Spike Jonze, Alexander Payne, Ridley Scott, and Mike Judge, so she's got a fairly wide range outside of straight comedies, and heaven forbid we have a villain with some levity.
Now, on the other side of the coin, I could see fans worrying about this slipping into Uma Thurman in Batman and Robin levels of camp. I think that's on the director though. Joel Schumacher had no clue what a comic book movie was supposed to be and just tried to do a musical without the songs, basically. I don't think Patty Jenkins will fall into the same trap, but there is certainly danger in letting Wiig riff too much. So it's gonna be a tightrope walk, for sure.
I'm eager to see this if it happens, but I'm also curious to see if it falls apart over those notoriously pesky "creative differences." Only time will tell. And money. Lots of money.
