After landing four Oscar nominations yesterday (Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Original Screenplay) Jordan Peele's Get Out is getting a second life as movie snobs now discover the movie the rest of us saw last year at this time. It's also getting the Honest Trailers treatment from Screen Junkies, who've nearly completed their month of viewer's choice Honest Trailers that has included The Boss Baby, mother!, and IT.
Of all the commercially successful films from the last twelve months, the backlash to Get Out is the most baffling to me. It's a tremendously enjoyable genre exercise that's savvy and well versed in horror movie tropes. Sure, the social commentary is mostly surface level, whereas the great horror films of old had to bury it in the subtext, but that's more a sign of the times in which it was made. Sadly, you've gotta spoon feed your audience in this day and age, especially horror audiences, who are collectively amongst the most easily duped people on the planet.
I always like Honest Trailers and I feel that they found a way to both skewer the film and appreciate it for how good it is. What oddly specific reason do you have for disliking Get Out? Sound off in the comments section below!
