Considering it started as a way to make fun of hipsters and turned into something more about the universality of weirdness, you've got to give Portlandia credit for remaining relevant for as long as it did. Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein have approached everything that they do with a lot of love and reverence for characters who, quite frankly, often don't deserve such treatment.
For my money, the show peaked with the "Take Back MTV" sketch that skewered everything from petitions to NPR donors and nostalgia. It was sort of the apex of what they could do within the confines of this particular conceit. The show has morphed since then into something with more of a through-line, but it's never lost its considerable quirkiness.
While the 8th season likely won't be groundbreaking stuff, it'll be nice to spend a couple more hours in the company of the some of the most endearing characters to roam the television landscape. I, for one, will be anxiously awaiting the return of Jeff Goldblum's third or fourth greatest character, The Pull Out King...
Portlandia returns to IFC for its eighth and final season on Thursday January 18.
