We saw another side of Oscar winning character actor J.K. Simmons last summer when he was tagged on Instagram getting buff in a gym. Speculation at the time was that he was getting ripped to play Commissioner Gordon in Justice League, but Simmons denied those rumors, saying that he was essentially always a gym rat and wanted to get back in shape.
Well, while promoting Justice League, Ben Affleck and Simmons decided to jaw for a while, essentially playing a game of "How Much Ya Bench?" In a new interview, Comic Book Movie reports that Simmons has a take on Commissioner Gordon that is somewhat unconventional...
"My take on Commissioner Gordon is that he's a badass," Simmons explains in a new interview. "But that's an under-appreciated part of who he is, because he's eclipsed by the ultimate badass, Batman. But Gordon is a tough ex-Marine, who worked his way up and can handle himself in the turf of bad guys. Compared to Batman, he's just a regular guy, but compared to most people, he's a champion."
As for why he was so ripped prior to filming, Simmons said the timing was all coincidental...
"I've just been trying to fight Father Time and stay fit for the last several years. It does work well with the character, but I haven't been specifically getting fit just for it - it's for general life."
Affleck, for his part, enjoys the idea that Commissioner Gordon is harboring this buff physique...
"I think he just likes to be ripped [Laughs]," Affleck adds. "It's a little weird, it's like the Super Hero Commissioner Gordon, who takes his shirt off and stars flexing [Laughs]. J.K.'s just as strong as the members of the Justice League."
I guess we can look forward to more of this, and maybe even a flex-off, in the upcoming Batman solo movie. Justice League is in theaters on Friday. Enjoy more J.K. Simmons below and a pic of Jeremy Irons getting stupid buff to play Alfred again...
