Wow. Just wow. I am, admittedly, in love with Guillermo Del Toro's films. With the exception of Crimson Peak, which I found dreadfully dull, I have admired or flat out adored all of his films. Yes, even Mimic. You have to see his director's cut. His latest film—The Shape of Water—looks like one of his most unique creations yet, a paranoid 50s sci-fi cum monster movie slash romance.

This new red band trailer for the film reveals a little more of the plot than you might be comfortable with, so tread carefully. The only thing making it red band is the excessive amounts of blood when Michael Shannon gets his fingers bitten off. Perhaps my favorite thing about Guillermo Del Toro is his ability to take a plot that sounds on paper like it shouldn't work and then actually make it work.

Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, Cronos, even his Hellboy movies, all manage to do just that, and I have a feeling The Shape of Water will be his latest to defy expectations. Fox Searchlight is platforming the film's release beginning December 3 in NY and LA, so look for it in mid-December or early January at a theater near you.
