One of Tim Burton's first and best films is the 1988 horror comedy Beetlejuice. Rumors of a sequel have been floating around for almost thirty years now, with Kevin Smith once verifying that he had been offered the chance to rewrite a script called Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Thankfully none of them every came to fruition, though not for lack of trying, but now there's a second wind lifting the project once more.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer Mike Vukadinovich (Rememory) has been brought in to rewrite a script by Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). No deal is in place for Tim Burton or Michael Keaton to return as director and star respectively, but should this rewrite turn out to be worth their time, I'm sure they'll sign on. If not, WB will find someone else to direct and star, I'm sure.
On the list of things we need, I would place a Beetlejuice sequel just slightly ahead of a kick to the groin. While I'm sure Burton and Keaton will only return if the script is good enough, never underestimate Hollywood's ability to drive dump trucks full of money up to their houses in a bid to persuade them. It's worked before. It'll work again. Mark my words.
