2013's Pacific Rim remains one of my favorite moviegoing experiences of the decade. The film was fun, loud, colorful, and a hell of a good time. Now, I don't know that it needed a sequel, but we're getting one anyway next March, and Universal finally unveiled a trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising at New York Comic Con.
Scored to some impossibly remixed version of Tupac's "Untouchable," this first trailer for the sequel looks like it's taking a typical "more of the same but bigger" approach to things. Think Home Alone 2 or Age of Ultron. The only returning characters are Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori, and Charlie Day and Burn Gorman as Geizler and Gottlieb. The rest of the cast is brand new and includes Finn from Force Awakens, cinematic wet sandwich Scott Eastwood, and a whole bunch of nobody else. They couldn't even throw Ron Perlman a cameo bone?
Anyway, the sequel that literally nobody asked for is coming and I guess we can either go see it or shrug our shoulders like the last time. The only problem is that they'll just keep making these sequels, because they make a fortune overseas. The film arrives in the US on March 23, 2018.
