Those of you waiting for someone major involved with the DCEU to finally say what everyone's been thinking about Batman v Superman for the last year and a half, the day has finally arrived. Well, sort of. Ben Affleck is at least acknowledging that the film had its fair share of problems, not least of which was the tone, which was grimdark and all over the map.
In a new interview with Empire, Affleck admits that the biggest criticism people level at the film—namely that it was too dark for a superhero movie—is valid. As reported by Variety, Affleck
“I can understand people saying [‘Batman V Superman’] was too dark, or this was outside the tone of what I’m used to seeing with a Batman story, and I think that’s a fair criticism,” Affleck said.
He added that much like “Wonder Woman,” the upcoming “Justice League” film will have a lighter tone. “Zack [Snyder] wanted to make a movie that was more fun, that was a little bit light, that wasn’t so encumbered with heavy melodrama,” he said. Affleck noted that the lighter approach to “Justice League” was planned in advance of “Batman v Superman’s” release and is not in response to the film’s criticisms.
So just like the response to Man of Steel's climactic battle was always planned to be a part of BvS and was never worked in because of fan reaction, so too was this shift in tone planned by Zack Snyder all along. Sure. Justice League opens November 17.
