Sadly this is not a feature length adaptation of the classic Steve Martin stand-up album. On the bright side, Downsizing, the new serio-comic film from Alexander Payne (The Descendants, Election), looks like it'll be pretty funny and sad all on its own. In this high concept new film, Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig play a married couple who decide to get shrunk down to literally live like kings in a new world.
There's a lot going on in this trailer, from Christoph Waltz looking like he might have a ponytail to Jason Sudeikis being the latest SNL alum to appear in a more serious role in an Alexander Payne movie following Will Forte in Nebraska. Plus imdb tells me that Udo Kier is in it, and that's always a welcome sign. I'm a big fan of high concept, Charlie Kaufmann/Spike Jonze type stuff, but it has to be done right. Something tells me Payne is going to nail whatever subtle social messages they bury in the subtext.
It's an interesting concept for a movie and I'm eager to see what they do with it. Downsizing opens in limited release on December 22, with a platforming release to follow in January.
