Reports of Ben Affleck and his spectacular wig's demise have been greatly exaggerated—at least, according to the actor himself. Late last week, rumors began swirling once again that Affleck had one foot out the door, but the bewigged Oscar winner sought to set the record straight at SDCC this weekend, where he and the cast of Justice League unveiled this new trailer. Here's the quote, straight from Affleck's mouth...
“I am the luckiest guy in the world. Batman is the coolest f**king part in any universe. DC, Marvel, it's incredible and I'm so thrilled to do it. I know there's this misconception because I didn't direct it, that maybe I wasn't enthusiastic about it. It’s f**king amazing and I still can’t believe it after two films and having this history with this great studio and Kevin Tsujihara and Sue Kroll and Toby Emmerich have said to me, 'We want you to be our Batman' and I believe them. And Matt Reeves doing it, I would be a f**king ape on the ground for Matt Reeves. Nevermind, being Batman. It's incredible. So, I'm really blown away and excited and it's a great time in the DC Universe and you're going to see some stuff from Justice League that I'm really, really proud of. And I think you’ll see why I’m so excited to be Batman.”
I know this isn't the news most people were hoping for, nor is word that Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon will share a co-directing credit, but I feel this is one time when we all just need to wait and see. Provided they took all of the right lessons from BvS's failure to connect with audiences and Wonder Woman's spectacular ability to do so, I think there's hope yet that Justice League could redeem a lot of the bad publicity the DCEU's suffered through. They rushed it out of the starting gate, but they seem to be finding their footing now.
The new trailer shows that there's still going to be a TON of noisy, catastrophic destruction on display, but such is the way of the modern superhero movie. Honestly, I trust Whedon to find the calm in those storms and give these characters some meaty stuff to chew on. Plus he won't hesitate to kill someone off, which will be interesting to see whom he selects to bite it. We'll all find out if it was worth the wait in a little over three months. Justice League hits theaters on November 17.
