Guillermo Del Toro is one of those directors who everyone claims to love, yet the box office returns for his films indicate otherwise. I must admit that I've been a fan since I first saw The Devil's Backbone way back in my days working at Blockbuster, and I've enjoyed everything he's done since, with the notable exception of 2015's Crimson Peak. For his latest The Shape of Water, he seems to be returning to his roots a bit with a film that seems to have more in common with Cronos and Pan's Labyrinth than, say, Pacific Rim.

Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins stars as Elisa, a mute woman working at a government laboratory at the height of the Cold War, who discovers a secret experiment. Rounding out the cast is a glut of fantastic characters actors like Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Del Toro regular Doug Jones, and the always amazing Richard Jenkins.

I must say that if there's one thing Del Toro does better than anything else, it's this sort of atmospheric creature feature with clear delineations between good and evil. This appears to be right in that wheelhouse and with a cast this good, I don't see how this one misses. The Shape of Water hits theaters on December 8.
