Hey, so you know how everyone was super excited for Season 2 of HBO's True Detective because Season 1 was totally badass, and how everyone was super sad when it turned out that Season 2 sucked donkey nads? Well, according to Michael Lombardo, HBO's President of Programming, it's all his fault.
Lombardo sat down with a lengthy interview with The Frame's John Horn on Southern California Public Radio. And in that interview, Lombardo basically says he was a soulless TV executive who stomped all over the creative soul of True Detective creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto, whose art is like a tender blossom waiting to bloom.
Check it out:
I think in this particular case, the first season of True Detective was something that Nic Pizzolatto had been thinking about, gestating, for a long period of time. He's a soulful writer. I think what we did was go, "Great." And I take the blame. I became too much of a network executive at that point. We had huge success. "Gee, I'd love to repeat that next year. Well, you know what? I set him up. To deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver. That's not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse. And so I think that's what I learned from it. Don't do that anymore.
In the words of Uncle Frank, look what you did you little jerk!
Seriously, though, it's pretty cool to see a TV bigshot man-up and take the pressure off the people who create his content. If more people were like that, we'd probably have a lot more excellent television to watch.
As for when we can expect Season 3 of True Detective...your guess is as good as Michael Lombardo's.
