Game of Thrones creator and captain's hat wearer George RR Martin disappointed his many fans over the weekend when he confirmed what many of us were expecting. He will not be done with Winds of Winter, the 6th book in the series, before the premiere of the HBO show in April. In fact, he says he doesn't know when he's going to finish it. The TV show has caught up to the action in the books which means that for the first time, the show will reveal what happens before the books. Martin also thinks that the show will probably get to the end before he can finish book 7. The reason it's not ready is he says he's been distracted and has had a lot of bad writing days and finds himself pulled in a lot of different directions. He states that,
"You're disappointed, and you're not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed... but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me."
Many people get on Martin for not writing faster. But I get it. I'm a writer too. When I'm not making the funny here on Egotastic I write novels and screenplays and I can tell you that it is not easy. If it is a struggle to write something simpler imagine doing something as colossal as Game of Thrones with its thousands of characters, dozens of major storylines, different points of view, and changing locations. As an avid fan of his books I wish he would finish too but I understand how he feels. So, cut the old boy some slack.
