It's in our nature to always want more. Whether it's money or food or women; we're just never happy and desire more. It's the same message every alien invader from any sci-fi movie has taunted humanity with. For this reason, it's no surprise when companies attempt to capitalize on a working product by expanding it into other territories; territories where they really shouldn't be.
In case you haven't clued in, I'm talking about video games entering the treacherous film industry. Rarely do we see a movie based off a video game to be of any real quality. This is for the same reason as my ‘franchises that need to die' spiel where a company takes over a popular product, knowing nothing about it, and completely ruins in it the process.
In the past we've seen such abominations as Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter and Double Dragon. These movies took everything we loved about the video games and completely threw it out the window. For all we know, these could have been a great start to what would become a popular movie genre, similar to that of our modern day superhero flics but they failed and now we'll never know.
Despite a horrible start, video game movies never seemed to die out. With more recent failures such as Alone in the Dark and King of Fighters continuing to emerge to remind us of our past mistakes, you'd think we'd stop there…but humans will be humans, so…
Recently, we've received word of the longstanding Metal Gear Solid franchise receiving the movie treatment and, to be honest, a lot of people are really skeptical. Metal Gear is a great franchise but sometimes not even a great cast can save a video game from crapping the bed on the big screen. I'm hoping this isn't the case with the most recently announced Splinter Cell movie. Tom Hardy has been confirmed for the main role in the film, and that gives me faith, but can that really stop the movie from failing?
Hopefully these upcoming video game movies can really succeed to the growing population of gamers and really change the way we see the video game industry as a whole. Wreck it Ralph recently came to theaters and it's doing great, although it's backed by one of the biggest names in the film industry and it's animated so poor acting is automatically taken out of the equation. We've had rare franchises like Tomb Raider and Resident Evil that have managed to succeed but it's a small portion compared to the amount of failures. I want some serious video game movies with some serious talent behind them. Video games have been doing so much for people throughout the years, it's time they're given they're shot at something more.
