The Metal Gear series has been around for 25 years now and Konami VP Hideo Kojima has kicked off the celebratory event in Japan to mark the occasion. So what was revealed? Quite a bit, actually.

Starting with the social gaming scene, Metal Gear: Social Ops has been announced for smartphones. The game will be available on the GREE platform and will give players the ability to interact with other players worldwide, while reliving past stories in the series where you'll form a battalion with cards to engage in battles. Metal Gear: Social Ops has been given a release window of sometime between Fall and Winter of this year. While a trailer was released at the event, it has yet to be made open to the public.

Next up is a brand new entry into the Metal Gear series. 'Metal Gear: Ground Zeroes' was shown as a demo on the PC at the event. While the video is, of course, not available to the public at this time the first piece of art from the game has been release (above) and looks pretty darn stunning. No real surprise, since Ground Zeroes will be running on the sexy 'Fox' engine. From what we can gather, the game will be taking the stealth approach, allowing the character to play as Snake in a Splinter Cell fashion (possibly to compete with their newest upcoming game?). The demo reportedly has Snake infiltrating a compound during a very rainy night; taking out guards and piloting vehicles while avoiding various search lights.

Last but certainly not least is the announcement that Metal Gear will be getting it's own movie! Probably the biggest reveal so far, the unnamed Metal Gear film will be produced by none other than Avi Arad himself whom stated that 'For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters – and video games are the comics of today'. He also went on to assure fans the movie will be handled with care, stating 'We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed'. It's a breath a fresh air to hear someone actually acting like they give a shit about a video game-based movie, since they tend to have a record of sucking big time and Metal Gear has huge potential on the big screen. While very little information has been released about the movie itself, a picture from the event has been leaked; revealing what looks to be a collaboration between Kojima Productions, Konami and Columbia Pictures...

Looks pretty legit to me but we'll have to wait and see on this one for sure.

Either way, it looks like Metal Gear is sitting in a pretty good place at the moment and is having the best birthday party ever. Congrats dude, you deserve it.
