Report: The Sacramento Kings Considering a Move to Virginia Beach (UPDATE)

Update: The Maloofs don't seem to have ever spoken to Virginia Beach.

Well this seems kind of out of nowhere, but a new report says that the Maloof family is considering moving the Sacramento Kings to Virginia Beach, and they've got some heavyweight partners involved.

According to Insidebiz.com, The Maloofs and Comcast will be in Virginia Beach on Tuesday to make the proposal. The report says that Comcast will help build a new arena in exchange for naming rights and local broadcast rights. The Maloofs have long been frustrated with Sacramento and its mayor, ex-NBA star Kevin Johnson. The family nearly moved the franchise to Anaheim, CA before last season.

It sounded odd at first that the team would be considering moving to Virginia Beach, but some research shows that the population isn't much smaller than Sacramento's. In July of 2011, Sacramento had only 30,000 more people.

The weird thing would be going from the West Coast to the East Coast and how that, if at all, would realign the league. It wouldn't make much sense to have the Kings in the Pacific division of the Western Conference, and the travel costs would jump considerably for those teams. I'm sure the league could try to schedule it so the Lakers, Clippers, Suns and Warriors wouldn't get killed with extra long road trips, but it would be big task.

Guess we'll find out Tuesday how serious they are, but with partners like Comcast already involved, and Live Nation reportedly also in the mix, this looks like it has the potential to be legit.
