Oh the things one could buy for $172,000: A down payment on a new house, computers for a village in Africa, college tuition for underprivelaged, inner city youths. Or how about just a sweat-stained Chewbacca mask from the set of the original Star Wars films.
Because that's what a lucky collector paid for the Chewbacca head at a recent auction. I could understand paying that much if, say, it was an actual Wookie head. Because that would look really good on my wall next to my framed University of Phoenix diploma. Okay, not framed, it's just the paper stapled to my wall, but still, a stuffed alien head would class things up a bit.
According to the auction handbook:
The front jaw, mouth, nose, teeth and tongue that comprise the facial appliance are original period pieces made for the production by Stuart Freeborn, and have been reassembled for the display. The eyes are actual casts of Peter Mayhew's closed eyes, taken directly from the lifecast that Freeborn made for the trilogy.
Oh, great, actual casts of Peter Mayhew's closed eyes. That's not disturbing or anything. Because I'm sure I won't walk down to get a glass of milk at two in the morning and not feel the thing staring at me from the wall, following me across the room. Whispering to me. Urging me to kill...kill...kill...
