Despite being released months ago, which in film terms is like ... 1950, The Avengers continues to lull in viewers and has now crossed over the $600 million for it's domestic box office total. And for those who don't know, that's a shed load of money.
Having destroyed the opening weekend record by taking in over $200 million in just three days, Disney have announced that it is now set to become only the third film in history to reach this amount. Now it ranks alongside other prestigious cinematic alumni such as Titanic, Shrek 2 and Avatar as one of America's most popular films.
It would take a huge effort from Avengermaniacs to make the film topple 2nd place Titanic at $658.6 million or 1st place Avatar which amassed $760.5 million but Joss Whedon and his boys should still be very impressed at their efforts.
It'll be interesting to see how well The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man can do when they are released over the next few weeks. However it is rather doubtful that either of them will be able to beat The Avenger's total.
Christopher Nolan's film isn't being released in 3D and the higher ticket prices that are now charged for these films make their amounts almost insurmountable for those who decide to make their pieces normally. On the other hand, The Amazing Spider-Man is unlikely to evoke the same response from the US as the combined efforts of Thor, Captain America, The Hulk and Iron Man.
Each of them will doubtlessly make a disgraceful amount of money though. Which will be nice.
