Between God of War: Ascension and Gears of War: Judgment we had to choose one and we're coming down on the side of Kratos in this one because that guy is not to be trifled with.
It's back to the badass beginnings for the God of War hero and we've been warned not to underestimate him just because he's a regular human being in this prequel. I got pretty up close and personal with Ascension's new multiplayer mode and believe me it's not intended as an insult when I refer to it as "Super Smash Bros with Legendary Warriors and not mushroom things." You've got the multi-tiered platform battling, the strategically placed weapon pickups and the built-in environmental threats. In the case of GoW: Ascension there's a gigantic Cyclops critter with an eye the size of a tour bus threatening the puny combatants the whole time. And that's just in the demo that we saw. Spearing that dude in the eye is the key to victory, but it takes a hell of a lot of ass-kicking before you even get the opportunity to grab the magic Cyclops-killing spear.
Really God of War: Ascension is the better "___of War" game because we got to experience more of it and there was a huge new multiplayer mode thrown in.
Honorable Mention Hot Coffee Mug for Best "____of War" Game at E3: Gears of War: Judgment
It was a close decision because Gears of War: Judgment was making a surprise E3 appearance and came packing a new multiplayer mode that we got to touch as well. In fact, the new class-based OverRun mode in Judgment is just the MP mode the Gears of War franchise has been waiting for and we should all be happy. It was very close and in the end God of War edged out Gears of War with it's cool looking and frantic multiplayer demo. Nothing to be ashamed of here though because, Gears of War Judgment still has tremendous promise with its prequel storyline as well.
