Every fight that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have until they fight each other is going to be a letdown. That's just a fact. No matter who they face, they will be the heavy favorite going in. Fans can hope for a good fight, but they pretty much know who is going to win (yawn).
Until the day when that fight finally happens boxing fans will have to be satisfied with bouts like the one featured at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Saturday night pitting Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. against Miguel Cotto.
Cotto is not a schmuck by any means. The man went into the fight with a pretty solid record (37-2); many thought that he had deserved the win when he faced Manny Pacquiao in November 2009. If he was able to come close, but not quite get it down against Manny an argument could be made that he has a shot against Mayweather, right?
While he did give a pretty good fight the end result was about as expected—a unanimous decision for Mayweather. Two judges scored it 117-111 while the third scored it 118-110. Cotto did manage to bloody up Mayweather, although Cotto was not looking too good himself when the bell rang after the 12th round.
For his troubles he'll take home the largest payday of his career, $8 million.
Mayweather was gracious after the fight and credited Cotto with being the toughest fighter he's ever faced. That's easy to say since he took home a guaranteed $32 million (and likely much more when all the pay-per-view receipts are finally tallied). However, he should be fined a few million for having Justin Beiber (and his faux-Elvis hair style) in his entourage (talk about losing massive cool points).
