Let's face facts here people. No matter what, we will never quite be satisfied with how the national champion in college football is chosen. It appeared as if pitting No. 1 and 2 against each other would do the trick, but that has not been the case.
Take last season as an example. The Oklahoma State Cowboys made quite a case for the No 2 spot in the BCS with their 11-1 record and high-flying offense led by Brandon Weeden, but was instead relegated to No 3. Fans were in turn treated to a dud of a performance from LSU and Alabama, with 'Bama taking the title thanks to a 21-0 victory.
Would Brandon Weeden and the Cowboys have given Alabama a better game? We'll never know, but if some of the proposed changes get approved, the same questions will not have to be asked in the near future.
Rumor has it that the committee is considering going to a semi-final type of system involving the top four teams. Games could be held on campus, but it appears more likely that they would be at a neutral site. The winners of each game would then of course play for the national championship.
There has been a lot of talk about a playoff type system with some even advocating a 64 team field (would take way too long). Smaller fields have been discussed as well, but it appears that the committee has weeded out anything that could not fit reasonably well into the existing bowl game format.
The committee will be getting together a few more times from now till the July deadline. It would not be surprising for more and more information to leak out as the deadline draws near. If any changes are made they will not go into effect until 2014.
