The Force Awakens broke nearly every box office record possible this weekend.

I know, I know. You're shocked

J.J. Abrams' first foray into the galaxy far, far away raked in $57 million on Thursday night previews, $120 million on opening day, $60 million on Sunday, and $248 domestically, for a grand total of $529 million worldwide.

All of those numbers are records, and all of those records were achieved without a release in China, which won't come until January 9. The final Harry Potter and Jurassic World still own the two best international openings (i.e., money earned exclusively outside North America), but Force Awakens beat Jurassic World's worldwide opening by $4 million and its domestic opening by a whopping $39 million.

Suffice it to say, The Force Awakens stands a pretty good chance of breaking the all-time box office record set by Avatar. That film opened to just $77 million on the same weekend back in 2009, but eventually made $2.78 billion worldwide thanks to repeat viewings.

With so much time left in the holiday season, plus the Chinese premier still to come, Disney and J.J. may supplant James Cameron and 20th Century Fox yet.
