Given its modest budget of just $58 million, there was never much doubt that 20th Century Fox's Deadpool would turn a profit. However, with the domestic gross currently sitting at $172,371,048, it's safe to say that Deadpool has far surpassed even the most generous expectations. Fans obviously love it, and—as a nice little bonus—so do critics.
Now, on the heels of the film's success, a petition for Deadpool to host Saturday Night Live is gaining major steam over on Change.org.
How major is this steam? Well, three hours ago the petition had 27,000 signatures. At time of writing it has over 34,000. So, pretty major.
And just so we're clear, the petition isn't calling for Ryan Reynolds to host SNL as himself. It's calling for him to host as Deadpool. Like in character, wearing his red outfit, mouthing off and talking directly to the camera.
Obviously, this is probably the best idea anyone has ever had. Top commenter Phil Maynard from Lodi, California, put it best:
I like to imagine Deadpool as, say, Alice in a Brady Bunch spoof. You know—brown wig in a beehive, blue dress, apron. Only, you know, he talks shit to the kids.
So whose idea was it? Some guy named Andrew Stege from called Matteson, Illinois. He actually created the petition four weeks ago, sensing that the movie would be awesome. But it didn't go viral until this week.
