It’s Not Only Kanye Who Hates Microtransactions

As far as a lot of gamers are concerned, microtransactions are the scourge of our times. They've kept popping up in news stories lately, a recurring story arc like the bees disappearing in Doctor Who. And what did that mean? It was a harbinger of the end of the world, and the Daleks coming to murderize humanity and all of that stuff. It was an all-round bad time.

Now, I'm not saying that microtransactions are the greatest evil facing the Earth today, but they're surely in the top ten. Somewhere between the big businesses that rape our natural world for their own cashtacular gain and the Kardashians. If a dollar-dollar-bills-yo power couple like Kanye and Kim are bitching about the cost of microtransactions, what chance do us regular joes have? No chance, that's what. It's time to make a stand.

Secretly, even Sony execs are against the bastardly business model. John Smedley, former boss of Sony Online, is now head of new development studio Pixelmage Games. In a Reddit Ask Me Anything, he had a good lil' rant on the subject himself.

"There will be zero selling of any microtransactions in any Pixelmage Games game including Hero's Song… no power will ever be sold period. Earn it,' he stated, before going on to explain why he hates them:

‘I don't like microtransactions because I worked on too many games with them. They change the feeling of development to one where you feel like you have to worry about the business instead of the gameplay. That leads to tons of compromises. I hated that. I also hated defending stuff we did to make money to our players... because they're right… they know we spent too much time focusing on that stuff.'

This whole spirit is being seen far too damn much in the industry just now, and it's going to see someone on the inside against it. High five, brother.
