When they were making Expendables 2 a few years back, the internet got wind that Chuck Norris had forced them to scale back the graphic language. This in turn sparked rumors that the sequel might possibly be rated PG-13, and that caused fans of the franchise to lose their minds. After all, people only went to see those movies because they wanted to see the action stars of their youth blow brains out and drop f-bombs. If they weren't going to do that, why bother?
Fortunately, as it turns out, there was just enough CGI blood splattered in The Expendables 2 to get that R rating. And that made fans happy.
The same will not be said of Expendables 3. In an attempt to make the film accessible to all the youngsters out there (who have no idea who Sylvester Stallong, Wesley Snipes, or Dolph Lundgren are, and definitely do not care), or maybe just to make sure they can show it to their grandkids (because all the actors are really, really old), Sly and the gang are making sure the third installment is definitely PG-13.
Stallone made the confession—err, announcement—week in Cannes while promoting the new film at that fancy festival they have there:
We want to reach as many people as possible. It's very close to an R, believe me, it's right there. But I think we owe it to the next generation. We thought we'd join that club for a while.
You owe it to the next generation? Well gee, Sly, when you put it that way...actually, no, I still don't like it. #SaveTheViolence
