This video of an angler catching a shark, only to have the creature capsize his kayak, has gone viral. There's something primal and thrilling about encountering a fellow apex predator -- and living to tell the tale. Here are some other incredible videos of shark attacks, just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water...
This Discovery Channel video is particularly scary because the great white shark shows amazing intelligence. It doesn't approach until the diver turns his back; it gets closer when he assumes an even more vulnerable position. So the shark is determining the best time to make its move. After testing the bars and plexiglass, the shark then punctures one of the two floats that keep the cage near the surface. If it takes out the other float, the cage could sink to the bottom, where the shark will have its meal all to itself. Whether the shark actually knows this is up for debate, but it shows that these animals aren't just mindless killers.
When a shark attacks a fish, the shark usually wins. When a shark attacks a human, the shark usually loses. So what happens when a shark attacks another shark? This amazing footage shows a tiger and a hammerhead eyeing each other, then crossing paths, and then -- the tiger strikes. The smaller hammerhead can do little except thrash about. It's almost as if the tiger is demonstrating its raw power for the people filming. The hammerhead eventually gets away, but you can see the cloud of blood rising from its wounds. It may be a later meal for the tiger.
Two photographers are in a cage and lure a great white shark with bait. Once the shark has gobbled down its free meal, it swims right for them. It gets its head caught in the widest part of the cage and thrashes around so forcefully it breaks through the cage, pinning one of the photographers below while the other scrambles above. Sharks can't swim backwards, so the shark just slams its body left and right. Finally, the trapped photographer gets out of the cage...just as the shark frees itself, so now they're both in the open water. It's all caught on the cameras the two men were wearing, and it's a terrifying encounter.
Sure, sharks command the oceans, but in aquariums, we humans have the upper hand, right? In this graphic video -- there will be blood -- divers have drugged a pregnant ragged-tooth shark and are leading it to a different section of the tank when it turns on them and chomps down on one diver's left arm. It's only a warning; the shark doesn't want to eat him. But when he comes out of the water to get treated you can see just how easy it was for the carnivore's jaws to break through his wetsuit and skin.
These canoe fisherman admit they were fishing for sharks -- and they caught one, a bull shark. But in another example of intelligence, the shark fights back, not by lunging out of the water or swimming away, but by trying to capsize both canoes from below. Watch as it attacks several times. The power with which it slams into the boats is impressive. Only the fact that there are two boats, one stabilizing the other, keeps the shark from turning the tables on the hunters.
A scuba diver is collecting lion fish in the Cayman Islands when a shark becomes very interested in both him and his collection. The diver is alone, is 70 feet underwater, and has no weapons other than his collection tool. Watch as the shark comes right at him again and again, and the diver can only poke and prod it away. It's pretty scary to see the shark dead center, heading directly at you.
