In my experience, there are a couple different kinds of retro gamer. There are those who aren’t all that assed, and maybe dabble in a classic Street Fighter II or Streets of Rage on their PC every now and again. Then there are the super-faithful, hardcore, dedicated, retro heads. For these guys, authenticity is mothereffin’ everything.Â
Emulators are for sissies. Sure, you can play Super Mario 64 on your cell phone while taking a dump these days, but where’s the fun in that? You’re missing out on the whole cartridge-blowing, often piss-poor original controller experience. It can be a pain in the ass to get Ye Olde consoles running on today’s TVs (have you ever tried playing Duck Hunt with the Zapper on one? Because you damn well can’t), but that’s all part of it. It’s a point of pride.
You’ve got to make some concessions, though. This is freaking 2016, grandpa, you can’t live in the past forever. Let’s all admit that emulators, when all wrapped up in a fancy-ass package and such, can be pretty sweet.
Nintendo’s got their own Mini NES console coming out this holiday season, preloaded with a selection of the best games the system had to offer. I’m not quite sure why, but I’m totally getting in on that as soon as possible. Until then, we can ogle some equally damn fine unofficial efforts, like the teeny-tiny SNES you see above (you do see it, right? Under the TV in the middle?).
Modder Lyberty5 put this teeny wonder together with plastic and clay. It’s about the size of two AA batteries put together, Game Informer reports, and houses a Raspberry Pi Zero and USB hub. It’s fully functional, gents.
