If you’re even kinda sorta assed about Sonic, I’ve got a question for you: What was the last game in the series you really got on board with? Was it the weird-ass King Arthur-inspired one with the talking sword? Was it, perhaps, the one where you ‘drove’ Sonic around using the motion-sensey powers of the Wii remote? Â
No, no it wasn’t either of those. Because they were shit. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed a few of his more recent outings; Sonic Rush, Sonic Colors and RPG spin-off Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood were good times all round. Sad fact is, though, his games haven’t been truly great for a long damn time.
If you owned a Genesis back in the day, you’ll remember how great those early platformers were. They hold up fairly well even now. The nostalgia factor is really freaking strong with these ones.
As we’ve seen before, the upcoming Sonic Mania sets out to cut the crap and bring back the ‘hog we used to know. Retro heads everywhere are liking what they’re seeing, and they’ll like this even more. Now this, right here, is a Collector’s Edition I can get behind. Oftentimes, they’re just a cynical ploy to get at even more of our cashtacular, but there’s some pretty sweet stuff here. Â
That Sega cartridge replica! The gold ring! The statue of Sonic on an original Genesis, which plays that iconic SAY-GUH sound bite! Screw Spring 2017, I want a piece of this right now.
