Despite containing the word "last" in its title, please don't expect the upcoming five-quel Transformers: The Last Knight to be any sort of period at the end of this franchise. The trailers and promotional materials have all been billing the film as a culmination of the Transformers films to date, and Michael Bay has also said it will be his last time in the director's chair, but he also said that about films three and four.
This latest international trailer features lots of new footage from the film, mostly because Paramount has learned that the international market is where these films really make their money these days. Things started fairly balanced with the first film making 45% of its total box office in North America and 55% abroad. By the third film, that ratio became 31% North America to 69% abroad, and plummeted even further to 22% North America to 78% abroad for 2014's Age of Extinction. Therefore, it will come as no surprise that most of the marketing budget for this effort will be spent overseas where people have yet to suffer from Transformers fatigue.
If you're a fan of the franchise, I imagine this new trailer will only make you more excited for this next effort. Now someone start the countdown clock on Michael Bay reneging on his promise to not direct any more of these movies. Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters on June 21.
