One of the only joys for film geeks in the Transformers films is seeing classy actors slumming it by delivering preposterous dialogue in the midst of giant robot attacks. Whether it's John Turturro, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, or Stanley Tucci, there's nothing quite as fun as watching respectable actors trying to help an audience make sense of why the truck that's also a robot is some sort of ancient something or other that holds the key to humanity's doom and/or survival.
For the upcoming Transformers: The Last Knight, we've got Anthony Hopkins waxing philosophical about Optimus Prime and the gang, and it adds an air of legitimacy these films just haven't earned. I honestly think that if they were to just chuck the plot out the window and focus on what really matters in these movies, they'd be infinitely more enjoyable. Instead they feel the need to trick the audience into thinking there's anything of substance here by getting a once revered actor to make the nonsense expository dialogue sound slightly less nonsensical.
Like everyone else, though, I'll be there when this opens in IMAX because there's one thing Michael Bay does well and IMAX is the only way to truly experience that thing... Spectacle. Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters on June 21.
