If you're a fan of high concept sci-fi, you're probably a fan of director Neill Blomkamp. The South African filmmaker made quite a splash with his 2009 debut film District 9, which was one of the few sci-fi films nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Though his follow-up films—Elysium and Chappie—didn't quite rise to the level of his first, the latter of those two began his working relationship with sci-fi queen Sigourney Weaver, a partnership that has now yielded this excellent short film titled Rakka.

I won't spoil the particulars, other than to say that if you've longed to see Sigourney fight aliens once again, stop reading and go hit play already. Blomkamp is using this to launch his new Oats Studios, which he hopes will eventually become a more interactive movie studio than any other. His plans are to begin releasing these shorts to the Steam, a gaming platform, which will give people the opportunity to recut and reedit the shorts however they see fit. For more on this concept, click here to read an interview with Blomkamp.

If you fancy yourself a fan of science fiction and genre filmmaking, I would encourage you to set aside 20 minutes to check out this awesome little short. It's a down and dirty little piece of filmmaking with some killer effects.
